Prairie Dunes
Although the first nine holes of this prairie jewel opened for play in 1937, it took 20 years to bring the second nine into reality. Perry Maxwell, one of America’s first course architects to be recognized alongside artists such as Donald Ross, is responsible for the original links characteristics; his son Press ensured that vision carried through to the course’s completion. Wind, dunes, narrow fairways, rolling greens, and ball-robbing rough called “gunsch” account for the track’s reputation as a real test of golf. With its eye-catching scenery, it’s easy to understand why Prairie Dunes has hosted a number of USGA events, including the 2006 U.S. Senior Open.
