Royal Dornoch
Ever wonder where Donald Ross got his inspiration for the elevated greens at Pinehurst No. 2? Look no further than the Royal Dornoch Championship Course, where Ross polished his design skills early on as club professional and greenskeeper. Working with a links layout originally conceived by Old Tom Morris, Ross, John Sutherland and George Duncan made tweaks and additions over the years, culminating in today’s venue, regarded by many American professionals and amateurs as a kind of cult favorite. Dornoch’s location in Sutherland, roughly on the same latitudes as Hudson Bay, has probably kept it out of consideration for the Open rotation, but it hasn’t diminished the club’s reputation, which earns regular rankings among the world’s top courses.
