Turnberry Ailsa

Certain parts of the Ailsa lack the contoured character of other Open venues, a circumstance attributable to the fact that some of course served as an airfield during World War II. Its transformation to a world-class links layout took place in a redesign by Mackenzie Ross between 1949 and 1951, setting the stage for the famous 1977 “Duel in the Sun” British Open that saw Tom Watson defeat Jack Nicklaus in one of the most dramatic championships in history. Since then the Claret Jug has changed hands twice at Turnberry’s celebrated course – in 1986 it went to Greg Norman for his first major win, and in 1994 to Nick Price for his second Open victory.
