Hole Description
A marked contrast between outward and inward nines characterizes the challenge of the 6,865-yard layout at Birdwood. The front nine offers open landing areas and approaches, while the back retreats into the trees, meandering through the rolling hills that surround neighboring Charlottesville. This is historically significant country - the course’s 500 acres are part of what was the “upland wilderness” land patent in 1739, one of the colony’s earliest. In 1974 the University of Virginia acquired the property, and opened Birdwood in 1984 in cooperation with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. Meticulously maintained to protect the environment as well as provide a challenging golf experience, Birdwood won a coveted 4½-star ranking among Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play in 2008/09.
