Hole Description
The history of the Island Golf Club is almost as rough-and-tumble as the glacial deposit peninsula on which it sits. Originally opened in 1890, the course was accessible only by invitation for the first 50 years, and only by boat for 70 years. Surrounded on three sides by the Irish Sea and the Broadmeadow Estuary, the course’s small greens, giant dunes and fast fairways were known only to a privileged few until the club nearly went bankrupt in the 1950s, when the owners sold out to “ticket holders.” The Club has since undergone renovations, mostly to reduce the number of blind holes, and has emerged as an impressive and much sought-after links golf experience.
