Hole Description
Designed originally to sit behind the dunes that line the Atlantic shore of Kiawah Island, the Ocean Course became the course it is today when architect Pete Dye’s wife suggested he raise the layout to allow better views of the ocean. Elevation brought ocean breezes into play, and the stage was set for the famous "War by the Shore" Ryder Cup matches when the course opened in 1991. With 10 holes next to the ocean and 8 running parallel to those, the fact that the wind has no prevailing direction can make as much as an 8-club difference on the way holes are played. Predictable? No. Challenging? Definitely… and one of Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest U.S. Courses.
