The Classic at Maddens Resort makes a loud and strong statement that golf high level golf has arrived in Minnesotas lake country. National publications have decreed it so by ranking The Classic high atop the recommended list of courses the public may play.

Loudest and strongest of all may be the long and treacherous 1st hole, a par 5 that is everything the golfer wants, and probably more.

Lined with trees from the start, the 1st demands a well placed and long drive in order to position oneself for the all important second shot. The ideal approach is to hug the left portion of the slim fairway landing area, leaving a short iron to a green. Water comes into play on the second shot that strays too far right and the timbered woods are never too far away on the left. Only the longest of hitters should consider an attempt to reach the green in two, but often enough conservatism yields as many birdies as go-for-broke efforts. Bunkers filled with Ohio sand also lurk about.

The Classic at Maddens Resort has raised the bar and a few eyebrows of golfers who heretofore might not have considered Minnesota as a prime golf destination. One round at this course, however, will almost ensure a return trip.
