Hole Description
“Wissahickon” is a Lenape word meaning “Catfish Stream.” It’s also the name of this A.W. Tillinghast opus, one of three courses owned by the legendary Philadelphia Cricket Club. Founded in 1854, the Cricket Club is one of the country’s oldest athletic clubs. Golf was added to the club’s roster of sports in 1897, and the Wissahickon Course opened in 1922. Author of Bethpage Black and Winged Foot, designer Tillinghast laid out Wissahickon (originally called the Flourtown Course) with some of the game’s most demanding par 4 holes, including No. 18. Today Tillinghast’s creation plays as he intended – with sloping, multi-level greens, mature trees and well-placed bunkers adding formidable challenges to what has to be one of Pennsylvania’s most memorable golf experiences.
