Some Highlights From Last Year’s Open Championship

As Stonehouse General Manager and Chief Photographer, I look forward to a wonderful year of new courses to shoot, tournaments, and new friends. But looking back, last year was nothing short of spectacular, so I thought I’d share a few memories from my trip to the UK:

Photo-1

  • It was a thrill to receive press credentials to photograph the Open Championship, golf’s oldest and grandest event
  • I was on hand to photograph Tom Watson’s final Open Championship round – what a memory! His embrace of his son on the 18th green was unforgettable (I wrote a blog post about this last August)
  • I saw and met celebrities by the score: Tiger (and his mother, Keegan Bradley, Scott Van Pelt of ESPN, and Herb Kohler (Whistling Straits creator}, among many others
  • I was honored to sit next to Arnold Palmer at dinner on three separate occasions
  • I experienced some of the wettest, coldest golf weather in the Scotland’s climate arsenal – BRRRR. And I’m a native Midwesterner
  • I scouted over 50 shooting locations around the Old Course; I found the best views of St Andrews are from atop the Old Course Bar; it’s right in line with drives from the 17th tee, so it was a thrill to hear tee shots whizzing overhead
  • On Thursday, July 16, I was privileged to sign prints in the Old Tom Morris Shop at St Andrews
  • I also shot other courses throughout Scotland and Ireland, among them:
  • Muirfield
  • Carnoustie
  • Kingsbarns
  • Trump International Aberdeen
  • Portstewart (the unique sod rain shelters are reminiscent of pioneer soddies on the plains of Nebraska)
  • Old Head (the most majestic course I’ve ever seen; the views are absolutely stunning, better than Pebble Beach in my opinion)
  • Trump Doonberg
  • Tralee
  • K Club

I shot 16 different courses in all. All-weather gear was essential, and I found that driving on the left side can have a rather steep learning curve.

If 2016 proves to be half as amazing as last year, I’ll be well satisfied.
