Pebble Beach No. 8

Few par 4’s in the world are the equal of #8 at Pebble Beach.

The dogleg right demands a combination of length, placement – and nerve, and not necessarily in that order. If there is safety on this hole, it lies via the long way around – to the left off the tee, but the player whose drive ends up on the right side of the fairway faces a second shot that perhaps has no equal anywhere in the world. The phrase “all carry” applies here as nowhere else. A long iron or fairway club must be launched over a seaside cliff into air space over the Pacific. And it must be on target. Anything right is fair game for beachcombers, if it is found at all.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is revered for its design by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant. Since 1919, the course never left the roster of great golf courses of the world. Any golfer who leaves this course unmoved, let alone unbowed, has missed what so many others cherish.
